Indian Senior Advocate and legal luminary who served as the Attorney General of India from 1996 to 1998 and previously as the Solicitor General of India from 1989 to 1990. Revered as a fierce champion of civil liberties and public transparency, he spent over six decades shaping India's constitutional landscape, a contribution for which he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001. An alumnus of Government Law College, Mumbai, and the London School of Economics, Desai began his practice at the Bombay High Court in 1956 and famously defended free speech and fought media censorship during the 1975–1977 Emergency. He acted as lead counsel in numerous monumental Supreme Court cases, including the Vineet Narain case on institutional accountability, the A.R. Antulay anti-corruption case, and the historic Navtej Singh Johar case that decriminalised Section 377. Known for his profound erudition, wit, and commitment to the independence of the judiciary, his legal legacy continues to be celebrated across India through the prestigious biennial Ashok Desai Memorial Lectures.
