legendary Indian Senior Advocate, jurist, and constitutional expert widely regarded as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of the Indian judiciary. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he served as the Additional Solicitor General of India, a Presidentially nominated Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, and the President of the Bar Association of India. Nariman was a fierce defender of civil liberties, famously resigning from his post as Additional Solicitor General to protest the imposition of the 1975 Internal Emergency, and he played a foundational role in shaping modern Indian constitutional law through landmark Supreme Court cases like the Second Judges Case and the T.M.A. Pai case. An alumnus of St. Xavier's College and Government Law College, Mumbai, his monumental contributions to jurisprudence and public affairs were recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 1991, the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, and the Gruber Prize for Justice in 2002. He was also a prolific author whose autobiography, Before Memory Fades, remains an essential text for legal practitioners, and his profound legal legacy continues to guide the Indian Bar following his passing in early 2024.
