Oncology

Oncology is the study of cancer, a disorder in which the body experiences an abnormal growth of cells forming new tissues. The new cancerous tissue comprises abnormal cells that not only compete with other cells for nutrition but also produce space-occupying massive protrusions.

The benchmark of healthcare excellence provided by the Department of Oncology at Aura Hospitals deals in not just the treatment and management of cancers but also in the psychological aspect of the ailment, as perhaps more than the actual contraction of cancer, the fear of getting diagnosed with cancer, has generated greater distress despite advances in the diagnosis and treatment of many cancers. Many people fear cancer more than any other disease.

From the standpoint of Aura Hospitals being the Best Cancer Hospital in Hyderabad, we understand the effect of fear mongering of cancer in society. To counter the same, the Oncology Department at Aura Hospitals is equipped with cutting-edge technology, offering an evidence-based treatment approach that ensures an ultra-sophisticated environment, focussing on personalised, compassionate care throughout the cancer journey. We just don’t treat cancer, but the patient as a whole.

The battle against cancer at Aura Hospitals is covered by all four fronts. Medical Oncology gains cancer regression through Chemotherapy, Hormone therapy, Immunotherapy, etc. Complex cancer surgeries with a high success rate and minimal complications are achieved through Surgical Oncology. Hemato Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant ensures cancer management of various hemato-oncological disorders such as leukemias and lymphomas. Advanced radiotherapy techniques such as Image-Guided Radiation Therapy and Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS/SBRT) from Radiation Oncology focus on high-energy X-rays, to destroy cancer cells. Additionally, our holistic care program takes care of all the aspects of cancer including the psychological, emotional and physical issues of the patient.

The oncologists in Aura Hospitals extend the patient-centred, overarching medical management to patients suffering from cancer across all ages and genders. Living up to the moto of “mindful, beyond medicine," the oncology department at Aura Hospitals believes and strives for the complete eradication of the disease, which is why, although their approach is patient-oriented, the spillover effect is reverberated across the community, thus reducing the stigma of cancer with one case at a time.

Since we concentrate not just on the early detection and comprehensive treatment of cancer but also on improving the quality of life in patients, Aura Hospitals is being fast recognised as the Best Hospital for Oncology in Hyderabad.

Types of cancer

Cancer can occur in any cell in the body. Some of the common cancers are:

  • Breast Cancer: Uncontrollable cell division in the breast tissue. There are various types of breast cancer, such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), invasive breast cancer (ILC or IDC), inflammatory breast cancer, etc.
  • Lung cancer: Lung cancer is mainly of two types - non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. While smoking is the biggest cause in most lung cancers, nonsmokers can also develop lung cancer.
  • Thoracic malignancies: Thoracic malignancies could include various cancers forming in the thoracic area (chest area), such as lung cancer, thymic cancers, tracheal (windpipe) cancers, etc. Radiation therapy plays an important role in the treatment of thoracic malignancies.
  • Gastrointestinal cancer: This cancer develops at any point in the gut. About 5-10% of the cancers occur due to genetic risk factors, but the remaining cases occur due to unhealthy behaviours. The most common types of gastrointestinal cancers are oesophageal cancer, gastric (stomach) cancer, colorectal cancer.
  • Colorectal cancer: This is the world's fourth most deadly cancer. Besides an ageing population and dietary habits of high-income countries, unfavourable risk factors such as obesity, lack of physical exercise, and smoking increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Gynaecologic malignancies: This disease abnormally increases the cells in women's reproductive organs. The most common types of gynaecologic cancers are the ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer.
    • Ovarian cancer: This is one of the leading causes of gynaecological cancer-related deaths in women globally but is usually diagnosed late due to the lack of specific signs and symptoms at the early stages. One of the prominent features of an advanced ovarian cancer is malignant ascites (fluid accumulation in the peritoneal cavity).
    • Endometrial cancer: One of the most prevalent gynaecologic malignancies, the endometrial cancer originates within the epithelial lining of the uterus. Pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine enlargement are the common features.
    • Cervical cancer: One of the leading causes of cancer death among females, the risk of cervical cancer is higher among those females who indulge in multiple sexual partners. Research shows promising strides in cervical cancer prevention and control. It could be the first cancer that would be eliminated by human intervention with comprehensive preventive and control strategies.
  • Blood cancers: Also called haematologic cancers, these cancers disrupt both the production (in the bone marrow) and the function of blood cells. In most blood cancers, the normal blood cell development process is interrupted by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal types of blood cells, disrupting their functions, like fighting off infections or preventing serious bleeding. There are three main types of blood cancers:
    • Lymphoma: This blood cancer affects the lymphatic system, which removes excess fluids from the body and produces immune cells. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that fight infection.
    • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia: A type of blood cancer which occurs more in males than in females and is characterised by dysfunctional haemopoiesis (damaged blood production causing anaemia, abnormal white blood cell counts, fever, thrombocytopenia) etc.
    • Acute Myeloid Leukaemia: Rare cancer of bone marrow and blood in which primitive haematopoietic stem cells (progenitor cells) are multiplied uncontrollably.
  • Genitourinary tract cancers: These are prevalent cancers which encompass a variety of lesions. The most common genitourinary tract cancers include bladder cancer, prostate cancer and renal cancer.
    • Bladder cancer: Bladder cancer is the most common cancer of the urinary tract with a high rate of recurrence. Early detection and adequate follow-up are necessary to treat these cancers.
    • Prostate cancer: One of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, prostate cancer could develop in 1 in every 8 men in their lifetime. Various studies refined the understanding of prostate cancer and the current treatment options could include radical prostatectomy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy.
    • Renal cancer: One of the main diseases occurring with excessive iron metabolism is kidney cancer. Numerous studies established the increased risk of kidney cancer in workers of the iron and steel industries.
